Tequila is a distilled drink made from the blue agave plant, hailing from the city of Tequila in Mexico (more than 300 million agave plants are harvested there each year!)
Tequila is most commonly served as a slammer, with salt and lime around the world but the taste of tequila neat, isn’t for everyone so let’s commence with the cocktail recipes!
Tequila sunrise
You will need:
- 2 tsp grenadine
- 50ml tequila
- 1tbsp triple sec
- The juice of a large orange
- The juice of half a lemon
- 1 cocktail cherry
- Ice
Method:
Pour the grenadine into the base of a tall glass and put to the side
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the tequila, triple sec and fruit juices
Add a few ice cubes into the glass and strain the mixture in too
Add more ice if you wish, and garnish with the cherry.
Margarita
You will need:
- 50ml tequila
- 1 ½ tbsp lime juice
- 1 tbsp triple sec
- Salt to rim and a slice of lime to serve
Method:
Pour some salt onto a saucer and rim a martini glass with lime juice
Turn the glass upside down and rim with salt
Stir the rest of the ingredients with ice, or mix in a cocktail shaker
Strain into the glass and serve with a slice of lime
Long island ice tea – *Warning, this one is not for the faint of heart!*
For 4 servings, You will need:
- 50ml Gin
- 50ml Vanilla vodka
- 50ml tequila
- 50ml rum
- 50-100ml Lime Juice
- 500ml coke
- 2 limes cut into wedges
Method:
Pour the spirits into a large 1.5l jug, and add lime juice to taste
Add ice to the jug too, and stir until the mixture is cold
Add the coke and stir to combine
Drop in the lime wedges and stir once more
Fill 4 glasses with ice and add the ice tea mixture
Paloma
You will need:
- 50ml tequila
- 25ml lime juice
- pinch of salt
- grapefruit soda
Method:
Combine the tequila (reposado, preferably), lime juice, and salt in a tall glass. Add ice, top off with grapefruit soda, and stir.
Negroni
You will need:
- 25ml Campari
- 25ml sweet vermouth
- 25ml Tequila
- Soda to taste
- Ice
Method:
Add spirits to a glass with ice and stir until combined.
Add ice and soda to taste.
